To My Parents On Their Anniversary....

A Green Wedding Dress

Nothing about your love means tradition
—not the laughing proposal beside the mountains that an explorer
named for his girlfriend’s breasts; not the green wedding dress
or the dog who stood witness to the vows.

When we came crying our way into the world,
your faces said it all: the weary bliss, the fear,
the knowing you did it together.

Years later and I look to your love  as a warm place
to run back to (they all do—the animals, the people,
everyone whose better because of the years you’ve shared
(most of all the two children who can spot love from miles away).

Together, you made our lives good.

Happy Anniversary to the best friends and parents a girl could ever ask for. I love you both more than you could ever know.

always,
your Maya
